Job Duties

As a surgical technologist you’ll not only be assisting doctors during surgical procedures but you will also have a number of responsibilities, taking care of various tasks before and after a surgical procedure. Before a surgical procedure you will need to prepare the OR, making sure that the operating room is safe and clean and that all of the equipment is functioning properly. It is your responsibility to create and maintain a sterile working environment. Preparing the OR also consists of counting, organizing and sterilizing surgical instruments. You will also need to review the patient’s chart and make sure that all of the consent forms are completed properly.

During a surgical procedure you will be handling various surgical instruments, preparing sterile dressings and cleaning patients incision sites. Your role will be to assist the surgeons and nurses with whatever they need and this may include things like handing them instruments, cutting sutures, holding retractors, counting sponges etc. You will need to be able to anticipate what the surgeon might need so that you will have it ready for them when they need it. You will also have to handle specimens and may even apply dressings at the end of the procedure.

After the surgical procedure is complete it will be your job to remove instruments and equipment from the operating room and also to clean and maintain the equipment. You will also need to prepare the operating room for the next patient.

Educational Requirements

 To work as a surgical technologist you do not need to be a licensed medical professional but there are a number of educational requirements needed to work in this field. There are over 400 accredited training programs around the country that offer the type of training you need to become a surgical technologist. These programs are accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and the training will last anywhere from 9 to 24 months. Before getting accepted into a certification training course you will need to have a high school diploma or equivalent and you may also need to pass a preadmission exam.

The training programs will consist of courses in physiology, anatomy, microbiology, pharmacology as well as legal, moral and ethical issues. You will also receive training on how to interact with patients, how to sterilize surgical instruments and also courses on surgical procedures. When you have successfully completed the program and passed a certification exam you will receive either a diploma or a certificate.

To remain certified there are some continuing education requirements that you must meet. You will have an option of either completing 60 credits of coursework or retaking the certification exam again every four years.
